When I was seven years old, my parents sent me to Summer camp in New York’s Hudson Valley. Among other skills, I learned how to develop the 127 film shot with the Kodak Brownie Starflash camera that they had given to me. Since then, I have been developing and printing film and have accumulated many thousands of images. Hopefully, this website will give the viewer a small smattering of my photographic work.
My mother was a performing folk dancer. One of her partners and close friend was the photographer Gjon Mili (1904-1984), who became my ‘Photography father’. I was photographed in his studio when I was about three years old in 1954. Over the years, I would bring him my photographic work for review and criticism. At his Life Magazine office, he introduced me to David Douglas Duncan, who also influenced my early photographic vision. Imagine both of them giving advice and constructive criticism to a High School kid!
Eventually, I grew up and earned a BFA degree in Art History and Photography from the Clarence White School of Photography at Ohio University, studying under Arnold Gassan and Dan White. After graduation, I became a professional photographer in New York City, specializing in commercial and reportage work.
After working in the Chemistry Department of Columbia University, I pursued a career in Medicine over the past 43 years, I never stopped doing photography. I use no special format: iPhone, 35mm, medium format, 4x5 large format equipment, and digital captures. My main areas of interest are landscape, aquascape, abstract, urban, and people. In a way, my photographic work is very eclectic.
